The film is framed as being the recollections of Sergeant Galoup, a former French legionnaire stationed in Djibouti (he’s played with a mixture of cruel reserve and vigorous physicality from the great Denis Lavant). Loosely according to Herman Melville’s 1888 novella “Billy Budd,” the film makes brilliant use on the Benjamin Britten opera that was likewise motivated by Melville’s work, as excerpts from Britten’s opus take over a haunting, nightmarish quality as they’re played over the unsparing training exercise routines to which Galoup subjects his regiment: A dry swell of shirtless legionnaires standing from the desert with their arms in the air and their eyes closed as though communing with a higher power, or frequently smashing their bodies against one another in a series of violent embraces.

The characters that power so much of what we think of as “the movies” are characters that go for it. Dramatizing someone who doesn’t go for It is just a much harder question, more generally the province of your novel than cinema. But Martin Scorsese was up for your challenge in adapting Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel, which features a character who’s just that: Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), one of several young lions of 1870s New York City’s elite, is in love with the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), who’s still married to another male and finding it challenging to extricate herself.

The premise alone is terrifying: Two twelve-year-outdated boys get abducted in broad daylight, tied up and taken into a creepy, remote house. For all of its sensorial timelessness, “The Girl around the Bridge” could possibly be far too drunk on its own fantasies — male or otherwise — to shimmer as strongly today as it did during the summer of 1999, but Leconte’s faith from the ecstasy of filmmaking lingers every one of the same (see: the orgasmic rehearsal sequence set to Marianne Faithfull’s “Who Will Take My Dreams Away,” evidence that all you need to make a movie can be a girl as well as a knife).

Bronzeville is a Black Neighborhood that’s clearly been shaped because of the city government’s systemic neglect and ongoing de facto segregation, but the patience of Wiseman’s camera ironically allows for your gratifying vision of life outside of the white lens, and without the need for white people. In the film’s rousing final phase, former NBA player Ron Carter (who then worked for that Department of Housing and concrete Progress) delivers a fired up speech about Black self-empowerment in which he emphasizes how every boss within the chain of command that leads from himself to President Clinton is Black or Latino.

The thought of Forest Whitaker playing a modern samurai hitman who communicates only by homing pigeon is a fundamentally delightful prospect, one particular made the many more satisfying by “Ghost Canine” author-director Jim Jarmusch’s utter reverence for his title character, and Whitaker’s motivation to playing The brand new Jersey mafia assassin with every one of the pain and gravitas of someone in the center of the ancient Greek tragedy.

“Raise the Crimson Lantern” challenged staid perceptions of Chinese cinema while in the West, and sky-rocketed actress Gong Li to international stardom.
